Writing a book can be highly rewarding, but it can also serve as the ultimate endurance test. Sometimes, you may need to find coping mechanisms to ensure you make it to the finishing line. Hayim Oshky reveals five tips that you can utilise to ensure you survive the book writing process.
Strike a good balance
As an aspiring author, you will have to learn to say “no.” You will need to maximise your time to ensure you produce engaging copy. But at the same time, you can’t commit yourself to writing 24/7; you still need to have a social life and give yourself downtime. Strike a healthy work/life balance so you can stay productive without exhausting your creativity and putting your project in jeopardy.
Take a break
Respected US University the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) advises students to take 20-30 minute breaks when studying. MIT explains that “our minds need an occasional rest in order to stay alert and productive.” I would suggest you apply the same logic to writing a book; take regular breaks so that you can return to your work refreshed and ready to produce something fantastic!
Maintain a healthy diet
Resist the temptation to load up on junk food when penning your work. Instead, cultivate a healthy, balanced diet so that your body receives vital nutrients and vitamins it needs to remain productive long-term. Utilise tools such as the US Government’s Choose My Plate programme, which helps you build a healthy diet, to ensure your body and brain both remain strong!
Tap your support network
The Huffington Post advises aspiring authors to tap their support network to survive the book writing process. Your family and friends love you and want the best for you; they will be able to provide you with the supportive words of encouragement you need to see your project through to completion.
Give yourself a treat
In a poll commissioned by Letter Days for Business, 80% of “highly engaged staff” said they get rewards or recognition for good work in the office. As your own boss, give yourself a reward after you’ve finished writing the latest chapter of your book. The promise of a drink at the end of the night or a weekend getaway can serve as the best motivational techniques!
Make the most of writing
While writing a book can be an endurance test, it can also be one of the most enjoyable experiences of your life. During the writing process, you can hone your literary skills and enhance your industry expertise. This is why it is vital, in my opinion, that you develop survival techniques when penning your next publication; this will allow you to make the most of the writing process!
