Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling recently revealed that she will publish the screenplay for the upcoming movie adaption of her book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Ride to the top
J.K Rowling wasn’t always one of the most famous authors in the world. Once upon a time, she was just a struggling writer who was desperately trying to get a publisher to see the potential in her Harry Potter book series. After being rejected by two publishers, Harry Potter was picked up by Bloomsbury Publishing, kick-starting a true global literary phenomenon.
According to The Telegraph, the Harry Potter series is one of the most successful literacy collections ever. More than 450 million copies of various Harry Potter books have been sold internationally. Meanwhile, the movie adaptation of the series has earned a phenomenal £4.7bn at the global box office. J.K. Rowling is now the most successful British author alive today.
Finding fantastic beasts
Rowling released a companion book to the series, called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Released in 2001, it masquerades as a copy of a textbook used in the Harry Potter universe’s fictional school Hogwarts. Rowling released the book, which is a guide to the amazing creatures of Harry Potter, under the name Newt Scamander; he is one of her fictional magical universe’s most prominent magizoologists. Basically he’s an expert on magical creatures.
This book has been turned into a movie, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. It sees Scamander go on the run after losing his briefcase, home to various magical beasts, on a trip New York’s 1926 Magical Congress of the USA. Due to the rise of a group dedicated to eradicating wizards, tensions between the magical and non-magical (no-maj) communities are already sky high. In the movie, Scamander battles to ensure his mistake doesn’t damage magical/no-maj relations forever.
Releasing the screenplay
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Movie will be released worldwide on 18th November 2016. To celebrate this magical event, Little, Brown Book Group will publish the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them screenplay on 19th April. Book Sellers writes that while Little, Brown Book Group will release a print version of the screenplay, an e-book version will be simultaneously published on Pottermore, the international digital publishing platform for Rowling’s wizarding world.
Commenting on this news, Little Brown Book Group CEO David Shelley said: “We’re incredibly excited to be publishing J.K. Rowling’s screenplay of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first screenplay she has written and an entirely new story. This is such a big year for all fans of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World and we are thrilled to be part of the team helping to bring it to readers.”
Fantastic fan opportunity
By choosing to release the screenplay to the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie, J.K. Rowling is giving her fans an amazing opportunity. If fans buy either the print or the e-book version of the screenplay, they’ll be able to engage with the wizarding world they love so much like never before. By capitalising on print and e-books to market the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie, Rowling has ensured that her fan-base will remain strong for years to come!
